Our History
Proverbs 18:22 tells us that finding a wife is a good thing and that the man that who finds a wife receives favor from the Lord.
This scripture holds for our founding Pastor and his beautiful wife Gloria. It was Gloria’s faithfulness and unwavering commitment to attending church every week that drove Milton to attend himself to see why his family committed to the ministry week after week. Milton accepted Christ and was fully committed to serving the Lord. In 1949 Milton wa licensed and ordained by Pastor G. C. Coleman at the New Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas.
Rev. M. M. Merriweather moved his family to Los Angeles, California. The Merriweather family united with Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church under the Pastoral leadership of F. D. Ferrell where Rev. M. M. Merriweather would later serve as an Associated Minister. He also spent ministering at the neighborhood car wash, it was there where the vision of leading his church was formed.
New Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church was organized on May 10, 1952, by Rev. M. M. Merriweather and his family, wife Gloria, and their four children Marvin Lynn, Alice, Edgar, and Lisa. The church originated in the living room of their home located at 143 East 51 st Street, Los Angeles CA. In addition to the Merriweather family, there were also six other members:
Reverand and Mrs. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. L. Terry, and Mr. and Mrs. Ike Morris. The church was incorporated in 1955. As faith increased and blessings flowed, the church moved into a storefront building located at 74 th and San Pedro. Within Two years the membership had outgrown that space. The church temporarily moved into another building at 105th and Wilmington ultimately moving into an abandoned Methodist Church located at 11400 South Hoover Street. Some referred to as “Holy Ghost Corner” although this location would seat approximately 275 many services were standing room only even after placing folding chairs down the aisles. June 8, 1983, escrow closed on our final location New Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church became the legal owner of this beautiful edifice and on July 10, 1983, shared in an “Entering Service” with the former congregation of Unified Baptist Church. July 10,
2005, Rev. Dr. M. M. Merriweather was joined by his congregation, community members, and political leaders in a ribbon-cutting ceremony where the 1.2 million Dollar mortgage was burned on this property.
